Choosing an Outfitter

When considering a hunting outfitter, I think the most important thing is whether or not the guide can be trusted and whether or not he is honest. It doesn’t really matter if they are dealing with elk, or turkeys, of if they are inexperienced or the most experienced. matter Anybody can and will tell you that his elk hunts are the best, but can he back that up? Do you get the sense that he is telling you the truth or is he just saying what you want to hear? Don't make a decision just from looking at a couple good pictures on a hunting website. Ask tough, pressing questions, such as: how many hunters did he have last year, and were all of them a reference for him this year?

Top Notch Outfitters believes that while getting a big kill is important, having fun and being safe are definitely more important. My experience has shown me that a true love of hunting makes the big kills even sweeter. If all you care about it getting the biggest the quickest, then you’ll experience a lot of disappointment through the years. Hunting isn’t always easy or always fun, but being able to enjoy every minute is what makes the difference between a lifelong hunter and a one-and-done.

Every hunter has a “hot spot” where they have seen their fare share of bulls, but you have to realize that they have spent quite a bit of time there and they know that they won’t always see something. There are even times where you will see a bull, but won’t shoot at it because it’s only an average size or it’s a smaller size bull. It’s not about quantity, but quality. Calculating the wind, distance, and everything else can be a challenge for anyone, so don’t expect to just go out there and find the largest bull ever. In fact, the best way to find those big kills is by using a professional. Outfitters range in specialty and background, but one thing they know is hunting and tracking. This doesn’t mean that an outfitter is a guaranteed way to get a kill, because they might even advise you to not shoot a bull because it is too small or they might have seen a bigger one nearby. Rely on the wisdom of an outfitter and if they are trustworthy, you’ll be sure to have a good time. Who knows, maybe you get a big bull...
